After almost 30 years of pastoring and now 6 years into coaching full-time, one of my
observations has been that there is a great lack of training materials specifically
designed for church boards. Whether you call your “board” a board, a pastoral
team, a board of directors, and elders board, a session, or counsel, my “church
board training modules” was designed specifically for you and your board.
Each of the modules focus on the most practical topics that a pastor and his team
have to deal with as a board. I have condensed each module so that they can easily
fit into a one hour conference call. Each module costs only $60, making it affordable
for any size church. You are responsible for arranging a conference call and any
costs associated with it. After the call you will be sent my module notes to refer to,
and pass on to your team should you desire.
Simply choose which model will best meet your needs. Select the Buy Now button,
pay for your module, and I will contact you by e-mail to get the process rolling.
Module 1. Re-envisioning the church board: cost: $60.00
This module is especially helpful for the church board and the pastor that have been
recently questioning, or revisiting, it's role or purpose. The “re-envisioning the
church board” module takes 3 steps:
Step 1: Each board member will be supplied with 28 questions for reflection. These
questions were designed to help the board think through the role of the church
board and its responsibilities. This series of questions is intended for the church
board member to answer on his/her own, privately, at-home, etc.
Step 2: After each board member has completed their questionnaire they will gather
together with the pastor to discuss, discover, and decide. Discuss what the exercise
was like for them. Discover the insights they gained. Decide what changes or
adjustments need to be made.
Step 3: The conference call. The conference call would then focus on 3 things:
1. I will help the board evaluate their conclusions.
2. I will help the board clarifying and get focused.
3. I will help the board develop a plan for implementation. This plan of
implementation might include:
A) Coming to agreement and getting people on board.
B) Developing a teaching focus that will explain and reinforce any changes,
adjustments, or simply educate the congregation concerning the role of the
church board.
C) If necessary, how to implement any changes needed to the church bylaws.
Module 2. The purpose of the church board: cost: $60.00
With the “purpose of the church board” module, I will train your team in 4 areas:
1. The 5 guiding principles from which all healthy, happy, and effective church
boards work off of.
2. The 6 ways a church board helps their pastor.
3. Making the major decisions: the 4 D's
A) dollars
B) direction
C) discipline
D) diagnosis
4. Developing a church board performance review. Note: this is not a performance
review for the pastor, but a performance review for the board itself, i.e. how well are
we performing our duties as a church board?
Module 3. Spending priorities and the pastor's pay package: cost: $60.00
There is not always agreement concerning how a church spends its money. Where
should the money go? How will we divide up the income pie? The “spending priorities
and pastors pay package” module will cover:
1. The 3 priorities for spending.
A) Basic operating expenses
B) The pastor
C) Ministries requiring money
2. Determining the pastors pay package.
3. How to navigate financially difficult times.
A) When to cut what.
B) When and how to announce to the congregation that the church is
struggling financially.
C) What are our options for addressing our financial problem?
Module 4. Developing a pastor's job/ministry review: $60.00
More and more pastors are welcoming an annual review of their role as pastor. More
and more church boards are also recognizing how helpful such a review can be. The
problem, however, with “jobs/ministry reviews” is that typically church boards don't
know how to best review their pastors performance and soon discover that the
models out there for “secular job reviews” are not helpful and do not exactly fit the
unique role and responsibilities of a pastor. My “developing a pastor's job
forward/ministry review” module takes 3 steps:
Step 1. Each board member will be supplied with a list of questions for reflection.
These questions were designed to help the board think through the criteria they will
use in evaluating their pastor. This series of questions is intended for the church
board member to answer on his/her own, privately, at-home, etc. The board member
will also be supplied with a list from the pastor suggesting the criteria by which the
pastor feels he/she should be evaluated.
Step 2. After each board member has completed their questionnaire they will gather
together with the pastor to discuss, discover, and decide. Discuss what the exercise
was like for them. Discover the insights they gained. Decide what criteria they will
use, and the best way to implement a review.
Step 3. The conference call. The conference call would focus on:
A) I will give a brief training on the Why, What, When, and How of a review.
B) I will help the board evaluate their conclusions.
C) I will help the board discover the best way to implement a review that will
ensure the experience will be positive, helpful, and empowering to the pastor
.
Module 5. Giving the pastor authority, accountability, and input: cost: $60.00
My experience has been that pastors either have too much, or too little, power or
authority to lead and make decisions in their churches. Either extreme typically
results in frustration and problems for the pastor and the church board. In my “giving
the pastor authority, accountability, and input” module we will learn:
1. The balance of freedom with boundaries.
2. Accountability: how much and for what?
3. Input: how to give healthy and helpful feedback.
4. What should a board due when the pastor crosses the line?
A) Where's the line?
B) Matthew 18
C) Seeking outside help
Module 6. Mix and Match: cost: $60.00
They say that one size doesn't fit all. It's possible that one of my 5 modules relates in
some ways to your needs but not completely. I've designed my “mix and match”
module to enable you to choose and pick certain topics from certain modules and
makeup your own module best fitted for your current, unique needs. After having
purchased your “mix-and-match” module I will contact you by e-mail and have you
send me your suggestion for a custom-built conference call training. After
determining that your topics for training will comfortably fit within a one-hour
conference call I will get back to you and we can proceed.
